Jason Isbell jumped on social media Friday afternoon (Might 12) to defend Janelle Monáe and the buzzy music video for her new single “Lipstick Lover.”
“Wait there are individuals who DON’T like Janelle’s video?” the nation singer tweeted. “Severely I don’t know wtf you folks need if it isn’t that.”
In a follow-up tweet, he doubled down, writing, “There are some issues all of us simply agree [are] superior so we are able to go about our enterprise. Like gold, diamonds, Outkast, this video.”
Whereas some trolls bemoaned the sensual nature of Monáe’s visible — on which she lustily intones, “I like lipstick on my neck/ Depart a sticky-icky in a spot I received’t overlook/ I like lipstick on my neck/ Child I’m obsessed, get me undressed” — loads of followers sided with Isbell within the video’s feedback on YouTube. For instance, one wrote, “This felt very for the feminine gaze, and I completely liked it! Every thing about it looks like summer time’s coming!” whereas one other praised, “I like how she highlights pure magnificence!! All shapes, colours, and sizes!”
“Lipstick Lover” is the most recent spotlight from the queer R&B star’s forthcoming album The Age of Pleasure, which is about to drop June 9 through Dangerous Boy and Atlantic Data and also will include the summery, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80-assisted lead single “Float.”
In the meantime, Isbell lately shared his HBO documentary Working With Our Eyes Closed with followers and used his platform to each communicate out towards Tennessee’s anti-LGBTQ+ legal guidelines and assist commonsense gun security laws.
